The Fine Arts Building is on the other side of campus. When I’m only halfway there, I’m sweating. I’m so out of shape. It doesn’t matter that I have supernatural blood in my veins. I’m still pooped and wishing I had a bike or a car.

I stop and lean over, heaving in gulps of air.

“If you were a vampire, this wouldn’t be an issue.”

I smile and stand, turning toward the sound of my half-brother’s voice. “Hey, Chris. I wondered when I would see you.” He told me he would be on campus as a student, and that’s exactly what he looks like. Jeans. Boots. And a button-up. His dirty blond hair is styled in, and his hazel eyes study me with a cross of worry and wonder.

“Hey yourself, sis,” he returns and tucks a hand in one of his front pockets. His other hand is holding a backpack in place on his shoulder.

A couple of months ago, when he told me he was my brother, I hadn’t been surprised. Because I had the memory of him always in the background of my life before I was taken. He’d been my on again off again protector. Then when he told me I was the fountain of youth and that there would be all sorts of supernaturals coming after me, I hadn’t flinched. He wanted to take me to the land of Sharra where he said I would be protected. But all I heard was that I would have to leave and be put in another prison. I wasn’t having that, and I told him so.

He and my aunt and uncle freaked and begged me to listen, but I refused to leave. I refused to cow to bullies for another second. If they wanted me, they could come, but I wanted to live my life freely until then. They reluctantly agreed and let me come to college, but there were contingencies. One of which was that Christopher would enroll in school here too.

As we study each other, I have a feeling even though I haven’t seen him, he’s been close by.

“Where are you off to?” I ask, moving again.

He steps in pace with me. “Wherever you are,” he says. “You’ve heard about the deaths on campus, I presume?”

“I have,” I say, gripping my bag. I glance over at him. “What’s the matter?” It’s obvious he has a problem.

“I figured once you saw Austin again, the two of you would be spending a lot of time together.”

Was Chris trying to pawn me off on Austin? “Yeah, well, you thought wrong,” I say, adjusting my bag.

“Are you mad at him?”

“I am,” I say but know it’s more than that. I’m jealous. “He’s been spending a lot of time with these other girls.” I shrug. “I’m not sure what to think of him.”

“Give it time,” he says, but I see him grind his teeth. He’s angry about something.

I debate whether to ask him what, but think better of it. The piano is calling me. “Maybe,” is all I say, and pull open the door.
