The Fine Arts Building is on the other side of campus. When Iâm only halfway there, Iâm sweating. Iâm so out of shape. It doesnât matter that I have supernatural blood in my veins. Iâm still pooped and wishing I had a bike or a car.
I stop and lean over, heaving in gulps of air.
âIf you were a vampire, this wouldnât be an issue.â
I smile and stand, turning toward the sound of my half-brotherâs voice. âHey, Chris. I wondered when I would see you.â He told me he would be on campus as a student, and thatâs exactly what he looks like. Jeans. Boots. And a button-up. His dirty blond hair is styled in, and his hazel eyes study me with a cross of worry and wonder.
âHey yourself, sis,â he returns and tucks a hand in one of his front pockets. His other hand is holding a backpack in place on his shoulder.
A couple of months ago, when he told me he was my brother, I hadnât been surprised. Because I had the memory of him always in the background of my life before I was taken. Heâd been my on again off again protector. Then when he told me I was the fountain of youth and that there would be all sorts of supernaturals coming after me, I hadnât flinched. He wanted to take me to the land of Sharra where he said I would be protected. But all I heard was that I would have to leave and be put in another prison. I wasnât having that, and I told him so.
He and my aunt and uncle freaked and begged me to listen, but I refused to leave. I refused to cow to bullies for another second. If they wanted me, they could come, but I wanted to live my life freely until then. They reluctantly agreed and let me come to college, but there were contingencies. One of which was that Christopher would enroll in school here too.
As we study each other, I have a feeling even though I havenât seen him, heâs been close by.
âWhere are you off to?â I ask, moving again.
He steps in pace with me. âWherever you are,â he says. âYouâve heard about the deaths on campus, I presume?â
âI have,â I say, gripping my bag. I glance over at him. âWhatâs the matter?â Itâs obvious he has a problem.
âI figured once you saw Austin again, the two of you would be spending a lot of time together.â
Was Chris trying to pawn me off on Austin? âYeah, well, you thought wrong,â I say, adjusting my bag.
âAre you mad at him?â
âI am,â I say but know itâs more than that. Iâm jealous. âHeâs been spending a lot of time with these other girls.â I shrug. âIâm not sure what to think of him.â
âGive it time,â he says, but I see him grind his teeth. Heâs angry about something.
I debate whether to ask him what, but think better of it. The piano is calling me. âMaybe,â is all I say, and pull open the door.
